Today was field trip day! After swimming lessons, I took the kiddos to play mini golf...6 kids + 1 adult + mini golf = super fun! We also had a picnic and played at the park. It was chilly out today but it was fun anyway!

We got home just in time for our snack project of minty green shakes! In a blender combine 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 3/4 C milk, a couple drops of mint extract and 3-4 drops of green food coloring. Blend up and enjoy!

We started off the day by whipping up "movie stained glass" This is the project that needs a week to harden. It is 2 C sugar and 1 C water...boil until dissolved. Pour into a shallow aluminum pan. Add drops of food coloring and swirl. Let set 7-10 days. I'll let you know how it turns out!

We then took old used broken crayons and peeled them. We broke them into smaller pieces and put them into a mini muffin tin. I melted them at 275 for 11 minutes. Let them cool for 25 min then pop them in the freezer for 15. When they come out, you just turn the tin over and they pop out! Cool psychodelic crayons that really work! Perfect for little hands :)

We made peanut butter playdoh in the afternoon since it was so rainy outside. It was simple. 18oz peanut butter, 1/2 C powdered sugar, and 1 C dry milk. Super fun and super yummy! Save the extra in a ziploc baggy.

For snack we made mini pizzas. We just took an English muffin, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. Broil for 5 minutes. Yummy!

Today was a simple snack project because of time. I just cut up a huge tray of fruit and then the kids made fruit dip by combining 14 oz of marshmallow cream and 4 oz of strawberry cream cheese. Simple yet yummy!

Sorry friends...camera trouble this week so no pictures only text!

First we spent a ton of time making an ABC book. It was simple. I took a quart sized ziploc type baggie for each letter. Then the kids cut out pictures or words that began with that letter and put them in the baggie. I stapled all the baggies together to make a book! The kids loved it.

Our snack project was Katepillars. I started with the break apart cookie dough you would get in the refrigerator section. Then I cut each cookie into fourths and baked. Each child got 8 cookies (which was really only 2 full sized cookies) to work with. They used frosting to frost between them to make a caterpillar. Then we used frosting to glue pretzel legs and skittle eyes.

Since it was our last day before vacation, we really had to book it to get everything done!

The big project of the week was hammers. We hand painted wooden hammers for our daddies! They were so awesome. We started out by sanding the handles. Then we primed them with white paint. After it was dry, I allowed the kiddos to decorate the handle however they want. Finally we used spray varnish to protect them. They turned out awesome!

Today we continued working on Father's Day activities. I found a really cute idea where you take a ball jar and paint the outside. You then attach a label that says "I wouldn't change my dad for anything!" Cut a slit in the lid so it is like a piggy bank. This is now where dad can put his spare change.

We also just had a little fun today and made homemade play-doh!! I found this recipe online and it was quite messy, but we had a good time anyway!

Basic ingredient ratios:
2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)

food coloring (liquid, powder, or unsweetened drink mix)
scented oils

**We added extra flour so it wouldn't be quite so sticky!

Finally for snack we kept it simple with strawberry banana smoothies!!
1 1/2 Cups frozen strawberries
1 Banana
1 Cup ice cream
1 Cup orange juice
Combine in a blender!

We had a really exciting day today with Father's Day activities!!

We decided that since dads really like cookies we would do a cookie activity. So we started out by making the canister for the cookies. It was just a Pringles can painted with acrylic paint. After that we made 3 different types of cookies and filled the canisters with cookies. We then wrapped them and put them into the gift bags we started yesterday!

This week we are focusing on our wonderful dads!! We have a busy week, because we are leaving for Michigan Friday morning. So I am cramming all my activities into 4 days. Also we are losing about an hour and a half each day for swimming lessons..whew! Oh well, we are getting there. As the children complete a project, I have them wrap it in newspaper and place it in a gift bag. At the end of the week, they will have a whole bag of gifts for their daddy.

Activity 1: Writing for Dadddy

My kids are little, so I created a template with sentences and they had to complete each sentence. The sentences were things like:
I love my dad because ----.
My dad's favorite thing to do is ---.
My favorite thing to do with dad is ---.
My dad loves to eat ---.

They just filled in the blanks.

Activity 2: A Pad for Dad

This one is super cute. You need: brown lunch sack, 4 sheets of paper cut into 5x5 squares (for 8 small pieces), a strong rubber band, and a stick!

Fold the bag in half, and place the white sheets inside. Hole punch 2 holes through all of the stack on the left side. From the back push the rubber band through on of the holes and slide the stick into it. Then repeat with the other hole. This will keep everything in place. Then the children can decorate the covers. I cut out the letters DAD on my cricut, but you could have them do it however they wanted.

Activity 3: Bird Cookies

This is a simple activity. You just take a bagel, run a string through it, coat it with peanut butter, and then roll it in birdseed.

Snack Activity: Baggy Bugs

Take 2 full graham crackers and place them in a Ziploc. Use the back of a spoon to crush them into a powder (dirt). Add raisins and gummy worms. Then dig for bugs! Yum!

Today is Friday, which means it is field trip day!! We journeyed to Miller Park Zoo. We had a great time, but before we left, we finished off our rainbow week with my favorite activity! Salt rainbows!!

A couple days ago, I colored plain table salt by adding a few drops of food coloring and rubbing alcohol. I let it dry and then it was ready to use today! We then layered the colors into baby food jars.

For our snack project we made Gobbledy Gook. It was super yummy!
4 C rice krispies
1 C crushed peanuts
1 C sunflower seeds
1 C crushed pretzels
1 C raisins
3 T melted butter
Mix and enjoy!

We started the day off with a science experiment. It was a rainbow milk project! First you take 1 cup of milk and put it in a dish. Then you add 3 drops of red food coloring to one side, three blue to another, and 3 yellow to the final side. Try to evenly space them out. Then add a drop of dish soap to the middle of the plate. The colors will travel into the center making a rainbow. What you see here is after she played with it some.

We then created a bubble art project. Using bubbles in a bowl, add a few drops of food coloring. Then blow through a straw so that the bubbles travel up the bowl. Gently press a piece of paper onto the bubbles creating the look seen below!

The snack project today was called peanut butter pinwheels. Basically you spread peanut butter on a tortilla shell and then add toppings. We chose rice krispies, sunflower seeds, granola and crushed peanuts. Then roll it up. You can see this one is a little bit open.

We are continuing with our rainbow theme.

Activity 1
Paper Plate Rainbows

Today we used just a half a piece of paper plate and paint to create rainbows.

For snack, we created banana pops. We used a banana, cut it in half, and then stuck the popsicle sticks into them. Then we spread softened peanut butter all over the banana. Last we rolled them in rice krispies, granola, chopped peanuts, and sunflower seeds. They were delicious!!

Today was Lacy's birthday!! Happy Birthday Lacy!

Activity 1:
Paper plate rainbows. We talked about how rainbows are really full circles, but we only see half of it, because the earth covers the rest. So we used paper plates and torn construction paper to create rainbows. Here's an example.

We then did one of the snack ideas that I was most excited about! It is called Arctic oranges. You take an orange and zigzag the top off. Then scoop all the inside of the orange out. Combine the orange guts with OJ in a blender. Put the mixture back into the orange. Add a cherry and freeze for 2 hours!

Unfortunately, they sounded much better than they tasted! While they were not terrible, they were not great either!

Monday, June 6, 2011

I decided to do a rainbow theme this week for our art projects. We are connecting this to the idea of Noah's rainbow and God's promise to us.

Activity 1
Thumbprint rainbows!

The children simply used fingerpaints to create a rainbow using only their thumb/finger prints!

The snack activity that we did was simply fruit kabobs. I put the cut fruit in the middle of the table and the children chose what they wanted to put on. Simple and yummy!

Friday, June 3

I decided to post all of our cool snack and craft activities for all those other mommas out there looking for fun ideas! I am going to post everything even if it is not that great. That way you can see what works well and what is not so great!!

Friday, June 3:

1st activity
Rainbow spinner

First cut 3 circles out of cardstock. Draw lines to divide 2 of the circles into 8 pieces of pie. Color each piece a different color. Glue the 2 colored pieces to the plain piece so that all the colors are showing. Now you will put 2 small holes into the circles toward the middle. Run a long string through those 2 holes and tie. Flip the circles around to wind up the strings. Spread the string apart and watch the color wheel!

2nd Activity
Dragonflies

Using pipe cleaners and pony beads, create a butterfly or dragonfly!
Final Activity

Dragonfly Snack

Using piruette cookies and pretzles, cover with white chocolate and sprinkles. Then use 2 mini chocolate chips as eyes. I used large marshmallows to prop the wings until they were dry. They were YUMMY!!
